Freestanding Tub Fillers: Floor Mount or Wall Mount?

When a freestanding tub has no faucet holes, the faucet has to come from somewhere else: up from the floor, or out of the wall. Each choice changes the plumbing, so it's best decided before the floor and walls are finished.

Floor mount

A floor-mount tub filler stands beside the tub, with its spout arching over the rim. It's the most dramatic option and lets the tub sit anywhere in the room. The supply lines come up through the floor, so they need to be roughed in before the finished floor goes down. Ours include the 29" Freestanding Tub Filler with 7" Spout Extension and two thermostatic models, the P1147 and the P1138.

Wall mount

A wall-mount filler comes out of the wall behind the tub, which keeps the floor clear and works well when the tub sits against a wall. Check the spout reach: it has to clear the gap between the wall and the tub and land inside the rim. Most of ours are on 7" centers, like the P1078 and P1128, and the P1133 is thermostatic.

Or carry the faucet on supply lines

A third way is a deck-style faucet held over the rim on supply pipes that rise from the floor, the traditional clawfoot look. Our faucet and over-the-rim supply set comes as one kit.

Placement

Place the filler so the spout lands comfortably inside the tub, on the side you'll reach from, and away from where you'll rest your back. Check the spout's reach and height on the product page before the supply lines are set.

Before you start

  • Choose the tub and the filler together, then rough in the supply lines to suit both.
  • Decide on thermostatic or standard mixing before the valve goes in.
  • Follow the installation instructions for the model you choose, and have a licensed plumber make the connections.
